(taking this with a grain of salt, but still posting it…)

“Blur is planning a relatively extensive world tour next year, including Europe, Japan, South America and Australia,” explained Ian Huffam of X-Ray Touring, who has already nailed shows at the Primavera Sound festivals in Barcelona, Spain, May 24, and in Oporto, Portugal, May 31.

The European dates will likely run through to mid summer as the act has also announced it will play Belgium’s Rock Werchter, which runs July 4-7.

Blur at the 100 Club by Carolina Faruola

My current anglophile problem: THERE WAS NEVER A REMOTE POSSIBILITY OF MY BEING ABLE TO ATTEND THIS. BECAUSE I JUST LIVE TOO DAMN FAR AWAY. I had this same problem in 2008, with Radiohead and 93 Street East. #firstworldproblems
Fun fact: I can’t watch their recent interview/in studio thing with the BBC because of the whole region thing. Again, people in my hemisphere aren’t allowed to watch because of reasons.

I swear that this is my last Blur-related post. No really, I’m trying. Okay fine, there’s one coming up about Primrose Hill.

I stood watching comets’ lonesome trails

So…Blur has released a highly anticipated new single, “Under the Westway”! It’s their first release since “Fool’s Day” in 2010. I’ve given it several listens and it does NOT disappoint. The titular A-side is a slow, soulful ballad featuring flawless vocal work and heartbreaking lyrics from Damon. Fans of musical theory will appreciate the classic chord progression of major IV, minor IV, major I (basically, it peels your heart apart with feels, then gives you pure hope that your emotions will eventually be pieced back together). The rhythm section is exactly as it should be: Alex’s bass is gentle and subtle, while Dave provides an anthemic drum track that complements the overall gravitas. It’s heavier on piano and lighter on Graham’s guitarwork than what longtime listeners would expect, but it is still exquisitely crafted and is definitely going to dominate my iPod for a while.

The B-side, “The Puritan,” is an edgier, more upbeat track, and is more of what I expected (had I not heard the live Damon/Graham-only version of “Under the Westway” for War Child in February). I really like the guitar on “The Puritan”. Spirited and unmistakably Graham Coxon, it provides its own raw narrative within the song. I suspect it will sound spectacular live! I was right—the guitar DOES sound great live (along with Graham’s backup vocals, which are delightfully pitchy, as usual). I’m not sure if Alex’s bass is what’s responsible for the raspy beats that kick in almost a minute in or if it’s simply a keyboard, but whatever is making those sounds works well. The song overall isn’t immediately awesome, but it will probably grow on me quickly (as is often the case for well-made B-sides).

I highly recommend that fans of British music—or any good music, really—go buy the album immediately! Fortunately, it’s not sold exclusively on the UK iTunes store, so us anglophiles can acquire it using legal methods :-) I’m tumblring from my phone so I can’t provide a link, but I’m sure you can find it easily if you just search “under the westway.” Here’s the album on the US iTunes store.

Happy listening! Sorry for my self-indulgent geeking out about this but I’m JUST SO EXCITED.
